I saw the movie, Interstellar, early this week and, in my opinion, it is the best movie I have seen this year. The premise was straight-forward: love (my recurring theme!) is a, no, the most powerful overcoming agent. Even when science fails, love always comes through! The context, however was even more captivating: Love guiding one through space and time! It kept me absorbed through every moment of the 2hr and 49min show.
Some of the scientific theories may be hard to grasp but the thought of how time varies in different dimensions and how one can move up and down and back and forth through time was a notion I liked. The movie examines how different times can converge but can’t actually merge. Within this backdrop the plot is played out.
Both Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway gave good performances and together with the special effects, exciting science, and gripping pace, the movie was most entertaining. The Star newspaper gave it a 4-star review and Rotten Tomatoes only gave it a 3-and-a-half star rating, but I would give it a 4-and-a-half star rating. I stopped short of giving it 5 stars only because its premise — about a father’s conquering love — is not exactly a new idea. As such, I don’t know if Interstellar will win any Oscars (who knows, it might) but it is certainly a very watchable movie.
What I liked most about the movie was that it didn’t have anything that offended the senses or sensibilities. There was no unnecessary violence and no exploitative sex — what a great relief! (I don’t have anything against sex but I like private pleasures to remain private!) Yet, it proved to be an entertaining movie. I can sum up all that I feel about the movie in this one sentence: It was immensely satisfying!
