I have only one wish for the country for 2017: that things will happen so that we can set in place a culture for the rule of law. Without a strong commitment for the rule of law, the country will be the way it is now.
Currently, the law is applied to selective situations to fit the purposes of the incumbent leadership. In some other cases, the law is not applied and some people are getting off scot-free. I would like to see the law applied in all cases, without exemption.
I am hoping and praying that things will happen to make the Prime Minister realise the futility of hanging on and he calls for a general election. By that time, I’m hoping that the people would be thorougly fed-up by Malaysian politics and will decide to give the opposition a two-thirds majority.
It is only with a two-thirds majority that we can amend and introduce laws to proscribe the powers of leaders and to ensure that institutions responsible for checks and balances do their the job independently of executive influence and we don’t see a repeat of what we have seen so far and are seeing now. This may be a tall order, but I am very hopeful!
I’m looking forward to 2017 to see what will happen to change the political climate of the country. I pray it will change for the better.
On a personal level, I’m wishing that 2017 will bring new beginnings and new experiences for me! Let’s see what happens.
Wishing all of you a very happy new year!
